Steel Pan Prototype

Steel Pan Showcase Video

This was a group project based on observations of an action, which we should build an interface to enhance it.

For this assignment, we decided to observe a musical instrument with intentions of redesigning its interface to make it more intuitive and enhance the musical experience. The musical instrument chosen was the steel pan/steel drum, a traditional percussion instrument from Trinidad and Tobago, normally used in Caribbean music. The steel pan was chosen due to its unusual shape (circular convex drum-like shape with multiple circular areas). The sound is made by hitting smaller circular concave areas with steel pan sticks, as each area corresponds to a different pitch.

The following image shows our idea and the final prototype.
